Using a feature that was originally designed for OEM computer manufactures like Dell and others to brand their computers, everyone can now safely customize their Windows 7 logon screen background.
The actual process requires creating some registry keys, folders and files. To simplify the process I created a free utility called the Tweaks.com Logon Changer that will allow you change the logon screen background with just a few clicks.
After you download and start the utility just click Change Logon Screen and then select your new background.
The new background will be active as soon as you select the new background. Click Test to see it in action.
Make sure that the background you select is smaller than 256KB, otherwise it will be rejected because of a size limitation set by Microsoft.
If you want to remove your customized background just click Revert to Default Logon Screen and the registry changes will be removed.

As soon as you install Windows Vista you are bombarded by the Welcome Center that is designed to help beginner Windows users easily configure their new computer. This new welcome screen is a nice feature the first time you start using Windows vista but quickly becomes annoying.
Disabling the Welcome Center is very easy to do and can speed up your boot as well.
1. Start Regedit.
2. Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Run.
3. Right click on the WindowsWelcomeCenter key and select Delete.
The next time you restart the Welcome Center will be gone.

There is finally an easy way (easier than before) to change your Windows Vista boot screen and use any high resolution photo as your boot screen. Using a great tool written by Dan Smith it is now possible to automatically generate the replacement language MUI file that contains your boot image files. All you need is two photos at 800x600 and 1024x768 saved as 24-bit windows bitmaps. Then follow these steps:
- Download Dan Smith's Vista Boot Logo Generator.
- Install and then run from the link in the Start Menu.
- Hit Browse for image and select both the 800x600 and 1024x768 resolution bitmap files for your boot screen.
- Click on File and select Save Boot Screen File as and save your file.
- Next, you will need to replace the winload.exe.mui file in c:\Windows\System32\en-us with the one you just created. Before you copy in your new file, make a backup of the original. You will need to take ownership of all files in en-us as well as give your account file permissions to replace the file as well in order to copy the new winload.exe.mui file in.
- The last step is to enable the alternative boot screen setting as shown in this tweak.
The next time you reboot you should see your new boot screen. If you have problems with Windows not booting properly, boot up with the Windows Vista install CD and replace the winload.exe.mui file with your backup.

Did you ever wonder why the taskbar in Windows 7 does not have a shadow effect like every other part of the OS? Did the shadow product manager at Microsoft forget about the taskbar? Thanks to a helpful developer, shadow aficionados have a solution.
The fix is provided by SweatyFish on devientART is called Taskbar Drop Shadow. Download the file and run either the bottom or top application file depending on where your taskbar is oriented. Options can be found by right clicking on the shadow and selecting preferences. There you will have access to change the opacity of the shadow, the color and configure the application to start with Windows.

Aero Snap is one of the best features in Windows 7 because it makes managing Windows much easier. Now users of Windows Vista and XP can join in the fun with the help of AquaSnap by Nurgo Software. The free utility expands on the features offered by Microsoft’s Aero Snap by allowing users to not only snap windows on both sides of the screen, but also in corners and add multi-monitor support.
AquaGlass is another useful feature that makes a window transparent when it is moved.

Stardock has released an updated version of LogonStudio that allows you to easily change the logon screen in Windows Vista. Eventually everyone will get bored looking at the same logon image every day. LogonStudio will allow you to change it with just a few clicks.
Yod'm 3D is a virtual desktop manager that allows you to have 4 different desktops arranged on a 3D cube. Holding down CTRL+SHIFT and using the left or right arrow keys rotate the cube showing the virtual desktops. Alternatively, you can click and drag your mouse to switch desktops.
Because of the capture software I used, the video is very choppy. Normally, the cube spins very smoothly.

Update: Yod'm 3D Desktop was sold to a commercial developer and is now called DeskSpace. Additionally, DeskSpace is no longer free but you can find a copy of the old freeware version here.
