The Power Play Interviews: Markus Frind- $3 Million in 6 Month

This is the first in a series of Internet Success Stories that you will begin to see on the Power Play Blog. Hope you enjoy them!

Markus Frind, the creator of Plentyoffish.com is a success story worth noting, as he has managed to take a niche formerly ruled by giant corporations and give it his own brand of marketing savvy. A case of David vs. Goliath, where the little guy comes out on top in the end. Markus is the top "individual" adsense publisher in terms of pageviews. Lets find out what some of his secrets are as he shares some advice with our readers. Feel free to comment!

Markus, what is your experience in computer programming and how did it prepare you for becoming a webmaster?

The average pageviews a day is around 14 million for the last week. I'm getting another 80 million pageviews a day from users polling the site to see if they have new messages. Really intensive bandwidth wise!

When I go to your website, I notice that the ads are targeted to my region, yet I have not even registered- can you explain to our readers how you accomplish this feat?

I'm just using ip2location.com- Basically i take your IP, look it up in the database and it tells me what your city is. I then bring up a list of users in your city, nothing magical about it at all.

Are most of your visitors coming primarily from search engines (SERPS), or are you finding that they come from other avenues? Do you actively advertise in the media?

Search engines account for something like 2% of my traffic. The vast majority of my traffic, like any other site with over 5 million pageviews a day comes from word of mouth, and repeat visitors.

The services on your site seem to be offered at no cost to the registrants. Is there some advantage you have over your competitors that allows you to do this?

I've developed new algorithms that allow me to create a mega site for next to no cost. Several years ago I created algorithm that was thousands of times faster then the algorithm used in the 1990's to find a string of 22 prime numbers. At the time a professor used several super computers and hundreds of regular computers over the course of several years to find a record. I did the same thing on 1 computer in 2 weeks.

Fascinating! Are there any other sites you currently maintain, or is plentyoffish.com the only one?

Its the only site at the moment. I've got a few other sites I registered for friends so they could learn to do marketing/affiliate stuff. At this point i think 1 site is enough.

Any tips for those looking to create a profitable endeavor on the internet?

IF someone else thinks what you are doing is a cool idea I'd say it isn't... Find something no one else thinks is important and build up a site with big traffic in that area. Also keep in mind, sites that have low monetization today but have traffic may be the gold mines of tomorrow. In the internet world anything and everything will be monetized at some point and traffic is king.

Traffic is King- very wise advice, Markus. One last question- How do you find the time to maintain such a large commodity on the internet? Surely you must have some other interests in life besides programming and website monitoring?

It only takes a hour a day on average, but its very tiring work. I spend the other couple of hours reading and seeing what is going on.

If you want to make money online, one good way is by displaying Google AdSense ads on your website. The Google AdSense program serves related ads to the content on a site. This means that ads are relevant to a sites content which means more revenue as more people click on these ads.

Here are 5 ways you can improve your AdSense earnings whether you are new to it or not and make more money online:

Tip 1: The shape and size of your AdSense ads. A popular and successful AdSense format is the large rectangle (336x280). It gets a high CTR when placed in the right place (more on this later). CTR stand for Click-Through-Rate. So, if 10 out of every 100 people clicked your ad, the CTR would be 10%.

Text ads usually out perform image ads since they blend in with text better and don't annoy the visitor as much as an image ad can.

Tip 2: The positioning of your ads. If you position the ad near to text that people are reading you will get a higher CTR. So if you place an ad at the top of a paragraph or in the middle of it, it usually does well.

Why? Because as the visitor is reading content he or she is also forced to look at the ad which means more clicks and revenue. Also make sure that the ad doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. So use an ad shape and size that fits into the position well.

The best way to determine what ads to put where will come from your own testing. But you can get a good idea of where to start by checking the Google heat map. Search "Google heat map" in Google and you'll find it. It shows you the best places to place ads on a website.

Tip 3: The formatting of your ads. What does this mean? The text and background colours need to match the content of your page. By the way, you can't go wrong with black text on a white background for your content and ad formats.

Think about it. Why are books written in black and white...because that's what people are used to and like. The links in your ad should also be in a blue colour. Use the default blue colour in your AdSense account. You'll see it there when you set up your ad.

Tip 4: Don't over do it with too many ads. You might think that putting loads of ad units on your site will generate lots of revenue...wrong. The best way to know which ads earns the most money is to see which ads appear first in the code view of your web page. You can see this code view when you do a right click on the page and select "view source". So the ad at the top of the code earns the most revenue with the top ad in this ad unit earning the most per click.

Tip 5: Test for what works best! You can use channels to see which ads are earning you the most revenue. This is very simple to set up. You just name your channel like "AdSense 336x280 top left" when you set up your ad.

This way you know exactly which ad earns the most revenue. You can then use the same type of ad in the same position on your other websites to make more money. And now i would like to invite you to download your FREE eBook "Traffic Generation for Newbies" when you visit RealWaysToMakeMoneyOnline.org/FreeeBook.html.

Multiple Color Palettes is a cool way to increase Google Adsense revenue. If you are fans of Quick Online Tips, you might have read my previous article regarding 7 key factors to build a successful adsense income blog. Among those factors, there is one thing that I would like to concentrate on and that is “multiple color palettes”.

Adsense multiple color palettes is a value-added feature that allows you to choose different colors of your Adsense ads in one ad unit. Your Adsense ads will automatically be rotated when the page or posts are refreshed or whenever your sites receive new visits. This optimization tutorial will make your old ad a new one to your readers’ eye and that can lead to better click through rate (CTR).

Create multiple color palettes in Google Adsense

Just go to your Adsense account and choose Adsense Setup tab to create new ad unit for your sites. You will see different adsense ads type here. Pick “AdSense for Content” and then “Text ads only” to apply this optimization tip and choose your ad size format, let’s say 300x250px.

In the “Colors” section, you will see Palettes drop-down menu. Click on that and go to the end to get “Use multiple palettes…”. Select this to deploy this tip. Now, you should Hold ‘CTRL’ or ‘Command’ to select multiple palettes as shown in the image below
Choose whatever color palettes available to rotate in your site. You can create new pre-designed color palettes if you want too. Click “Continue” to go to the “Channel” section where you should create one channel for this palette to see how good it is. That is almost done!

Now, you can copy the code and paste on your blog. You can test yourself by opening a new post and the old color palettes will be replaced with new ones.

What is the most successful Adsense color palette?

That is an interesting question to many of us. I must say again that “no size fits all” slogan can apply to this question too. The color palette should carefully be blended to match your design, background and font. You can not use red color for your adsense ads in your blog where your background is also in red as no one can see your ads at all.

You must be creative in choosing the right color palettes for your site based on different criteria like background, title format, font color… To help you know what the most successful color palette is for you, I would recommend you visit Google suggestions on how to choose the best color palettes for adsense.

Good luck to you all and I am happy to hear your feedback too.

Google Analytics is one of the top tools out there for analyzing traffic on your website. With a little bit of setup, it will give you an enormous amount of information about who is coming to your site, what they're looking for, and how they're getting there. In fact, it has so much information that it can be overwhelming! Don't let it scare you away. With just a little training, you too will be able to use Google Analytics like a pro.

Google Analytics is a powerful tool for monitoring all aspects of your websites traffic, from referrals to search engine activity.http://www.creativetechs.com/iq/google_analytics.html1 And like any application designed to do so much, Google Analytics comes with a rather steep learning curve, which can be intimidating at first. This page is designed to ease you into the application, and teach you how to use Google Analytics.

This featured video is a tutorial about the Google Analytics interface. It takes you through the different reporting sections on the Google Analytics dashboard. You can see which search engine a user came from, the country they are in, how long they were on the page, and many other useful analytic tools.

Step 1: Set Up Your Account

In order to use Google Analytics, you'll need to set up an account with them. This will provide you with a unique identifier to add to your site. You can only access information about your own site; you can't access information for other sites unless the site owner explicitly grants you access. The only people with access to your information will be people you grant access to.

1.Go to the Google Analytics website (www.google.com/analytics).http://www.google.com/analytics/2

2.If you do not have a Google account, click Sign Up Now, to the left of the sign-in box. This will take you to a page where you can sign up for a Google account.

3.If you have a Google account, use your email address and password to sign in.

4.Click the Sign Up button to continue.

5.In the next window, provide Google with the URL of the site you wish to analyze.

6.Give the site an account name that is easy to remember. If you will be tracking multiple sites, this is especially important.

7.Select the country your site is based in, or the country it is serving. Then select the appropriate time zone.

If your site is based in India but all your users are in the U.S., you may want to select a U.S. time zone to figure out when in their day most choose to use your site - or you may want to set it to your city's time zone to see when you need the most workers on staff.

8.Click Continue.

9.In the next window, provide your contact information.

10.Click Continue.

11.In the next window, read the Google Analytics terms of service. If you agree with them, click the Yes box.

12.Click Create New Account.

13.Google will provide you with a block of code. Copy this - you'll need to insert it into your web site.

Step 2: Insert Google Analytics JavaScript Into Your Pages

You must insert the code into every page you want tracked. If you have a technical person who takes care of your pages, have them add the code for you.

Inserting Google Analytics Code for Most Sites

To insert the Google Analytics code, you need to get into the guts of your page - the HTML.

If you are using a service like WordPress, you'll need to open the footer.php file to place this code.

1.Find the tag at the very bottom, just above the page.

2.Do you see the code urchinTracker(), utmLinker(), utmSetTrans(), or utmLinkPost() above the tag? If so, you must paste the Google Analytics Javascript above that code. If not, paste it immediately above the tag.

3.If you have templates, insert the code into them as well.

4.Once you have uploaded the pages back to your site, you can begin tracking information!

Some other websites may allow you to add Google Analytics code to their website. You may have to add the code to each individual page, or you may just be required to insert the number code that starts with UA-. Check with the website to see if adding it is acceptable, and the proper way to do it for that specific website.http://www.edbatista.com/2006/02/google_analytic.html3

Step 2: Insert Google Analytics JavaScript Into Your Pages

Step 3: Get an Overview of Your Site Performance

The moment you set up your account and insert Google's JavaScript into your pages, Google Analytics has great charts that will give you an overview of your site's performance, if you know how to read them.

1.Log in to Google Analytics.

2.In the center of the page is a section titled Website Profiles. Click on the View Reports link to the right of the name of the site you're interested in. This will bring you to the Dashboard.

3.At the top of the page is a chart that gives a visual representation of your site traffic over the past month.

This chart will only give you data from the time you inserted the tracking code into your pages.

If you want to change the span of time the chart displays, click on the dates in the upper right-hand corner. Click on dates in the calendar that is revealed or manually type in dates to view a different span of time.

To compare traffic over two different time periods, select one date range you want to use, click Compare to Past, and select the range you wish to compare it against.

Just below the dates is a menu that says Visits. Click on it to change the graph to pageviews (how many times the pages on your site have been viewed), pages per visit (how many pages on your site users visited on average), average time on site (how long each user spent on your site), bounce rate (what percentage of users left after visiting only one page), or percentage of new visits (how many visitors had never been to your site before).

4.Immediately beneath that chart, you'll see a header that says Site Usage, with six small charts underneath. Under Site Usage, you'll find quick information on various site traffic statistics for the time period shown in the main chart. Each one has an individual chart.

Visits tells you how many visits there were to your page. A visit is defined as a page view when that user has viewed no other page on your site in the past half hour.

Pageviews tells how many times the pages on your site have been viewed.

Pages/visit tells how many pages, on average, users view when they come to your site.

Bounce Rate tells what percentage of users left after viewing only one page on your site.

Avg. Time on Site shows how long each user spent on your site.

New Visits shows what percentage of your users have not visited your site before.

5.The Visitors Overview graph shows how many visitors have come to your site.

This number is usually lower than the Visits statistic, sometimes a lot lower, because some visitors may visit your site over and over again.

Click on View Report to view more detailed information about your visitors.

6."Map Overlay" displays what countries your visitors are coming from.

The darker the green, the more visitors come from that country.

Click View Report to get in-depth information on where your visitors come from.

7.Traffic Sources Overview shows which percentage of users are getting to your site by typing your URL directly into their browser, and via search engines, referring sites, and other avenues such as emailed links.

Click on View Report to get breakdowns of exactly what places your users are coming from, and what keywords they're looking for.

8.Content Overview specifies the top five most viewed pages over the time period you're looking at.

Click on the name of any page to get extremely detailed information about where the people viewing that page came from, how long they spent on the page, how many of them were new to the page, and a lot more.

Click on View Report to get access to information about the performance of all pages on the site

Step 4: See How Your Site Is Performing Daily and Hourly

If you want to find out whether your site has peaks during certain times of day or on certain days of the week, Google Analytics can tell you.

1.In the menu to the left, click on the word Visitors.

2.To the left beneath the main chart, you'll see a number of different statistical breakouts.

3.Click on any of the words to get a bar-chart breakout of the daily performance for that aspect of site traffic measurement.

4.If you want to learn hour-by-hour trends, click on the word Hourly above the bar chart to see an hour by hour graph for the time period at hand.

5.To compare two different time periods, click on the dates above the line graph. Select the first set of dates you want to work with, check the Compare to Past box, click on the second set of dates, and click the Apply Range button

Step 5: See Where Your Traffic Comes From

Are you getting most of your traffic from search engines? Is there a blog that links to your pages and generates a bunch of traffic? Here's how to find out.

1.In the lower right-hand corner of the Dashboard you'll find your site's top 5 most-accessed pages. Click on any of these.

2.Below the chart on the right hand side, you will see a heading labeled Landing Page Optimization. Click on the link beneath it labeled Entrance Sources.

3.Beneath the chart, you'll see a table. This table lists all the places your users came from to visit your site.

In the first column to the right of the source name is the number of pageviews your page received from that source.

The next column tells how many of those were unique pageviews - someone coming to your page who had not been to that page before in the time frame you're reviewing.

Time on Page tells you how much time, on average, users from that particular source spent on the page in question.

Bounce Rate shows how many people from that specific source left your site after looking at that page, without viewing another page.

% Exit shows how many people from that specific source went to another site from that page. (This number may be lower than the Bounce Rate number; if they close the window or shut down their browser, it is not considered exiting.)

When you set up certain financial measurements in the Goals section, Google will crunch the numbers to show you how much return you're getting with the $ Index column.

4.If you want to get information on other pages, under the Content menu on the right, click on the Content by Title menu item. You can now go through all of your content to learn information on every page!

5.Return to the main dashboard by clicking on the word Dashboard in the upper-left corner.

Although it involves a few technical steps that may be hard to learn at first, using Google Analytics is something that gets much easier as time goes by and you get a better feel for the exact kind of data you need. And since it's an application from Google, you can be certain that new and useful features will be coming around often. So make sure to keep an eye for new announcements and you'll be an Analytics Pro in no time!http://analytics.blogspot.com/4

There are many different avenues of potential income streams on the internet. One of these potential income streams is called Google AdSense. Google AdSense is a platform upon which publishers that have websites can display Google ads on. It's the Ad Words marketers that are paying for these ads (payment goes to Google and the AdSense marketers). This is by far the most powerful tool one can utilize to pull in a solid income stream. The main reason for this is because a potential customer only has to click on the link for the AdSense marketer to get paid; the customers don't even have to buy anything. Typically, the incentive to simply click is much higher than the incentive to make a purchase because of the fact that a potential customer has nothing to lose when simply making a click. The worst that can happen is they dislike the page they have clicked to, and simply click back. However, the AdSense marketer gets paid, and Google gets paid for this action.

Now, the following information will be gold to you. Heck, I already feel as if I've said too much. No one will give you information like this for free. So here it goes. The key to Google AdSense success is to tailor a website solely made for expensive keywords (and then drive traffic to it). That's it! That's all! You can find keyword statistics by using the Google Keyword Generator. This device will let you find expensive keywords that have super high bids like $0.50 a click, all the way up to $2.00 a click! And the numbers keep getting higher folks. Imagine having a super cool website on whatever niche you find to have the most expensive keywords, and then receiving a dollar for every click that a potential customer makes on your AdSense links. Yeah, that is going to add up very quickly! This is where the money's at! Find expensive keywords and tailor websites to those keywords, then display your AdSense ads, and watch the cash flow. It's shocking isn't it? I wish I had discovered this technique sooner. Now it's yours. Try not to tell everyone.

At this point, aside from driving as much relevant traffic to your site as possible, there are other things that one can do to ensure success. For instance, the location of your AdSense ads on your webpage will have a huge impact on whether or not potential customers will want to click. Another thing is to make sure that your keywords are littered throughout the website; not too much, only a little. Let's just say that it's a fine line between too little and too many keyword drops. So, the right amount of keyword repetition and usage will serve you well.

Hope this information serves you as well as it has served me. I use these tactics myself, so rest assured knowing that they work for somebody out there. Just use them wisely, and don't get yourself in a heap of trouble by keyword stuffing!

Some sites advertise to make more profit while others make advert just to keep the site existing. The point still remains that you need Google Ad sense PPC program for your advertisement. There are many websites out there online that do anything just to get visitors to their sites. For example, there are sites with pop – up ads with the message “you just won a prize”, just to get visitors. At the end, most of these visitors come and go without any benefits for the site owners. Be wise; do not deceive people/ visitors to come to your site. It is the best way of losing money in PPC program.

You need to carefully consider and examine the kinds of visitors or customers you need. This is very important when it comes to money making. So, this should determine how and where your ads will be displayed. Pop – up and flashy banners of advertisement are not good for all customers. It is very good to let what you put in your ads be determined by what the content of your site says. For example, if your site is all about web hosting your ads must concern related products or services to web hosting. e.g. web creation services, web templates, web promotion, web hosting etc. If your ads contain related things or message about what your website conttent is all about, there is the assurance of getting high numbers of clicks and so high numbers of visitors to your site.

This leads us to a very necessary question. This question is where and how can we get people or partners that are ready to give the ads we need on our site. You can decide to wait till website owners come to you and demand to place ads on your site. You can also decide to approach or look for them and demand that they place ads on your site. Often the eagerness to start making money with AdSense blinds a new AdSense publisher to the importance of knowing the rules on how to use AdSense. Many beginners dismiss the need to know about all the rules often assuming that all AdSense rules are common sense. You should know the rules of the game before you start playing it otherwise you could spend a long time doing it wrong.

But this is one of the most common mistakes AdSense beginners make. The fact is that AdSense is a scheme that operates on the web that enables publishers to make money. With so many things on the web been so quick, free and easy, it doesn't take much to realize that it needs to be controlled and regulated tightly for it to work properly. That's why AdSense has so many rules, to make sure that the scheme works properly... for as many people as possible. But even with all the rules in place there are still some experienced AdSense publishers that still break them and still get punished.

So what are the AdSense rules you need to know?

First, you need to know that Google are very particular about the type of website that their ads are displayed on. AdSense ads should not be put on pages containing, adult, hacking and gambling content. It also can't be used on sites that promote violence or religious intolerance. The list goes on but you get the general idea of this particular rule. Basically you should avoid putting AdSense on sites that contain negative, non-family safe or potentially offensive material.

Unfortunately, some of these types of sites are extremely popular on the web. But remember, do not put AdSense ads on these sites unless you want to get banned.

This rule also applies to content generated by users. As an AdSense a publisher, Google makes you responsible for ALL the content that you display on your website. So you must monitor all the content that is created by the users of your site to make sure they don't break any AdSense rules. This means that a human being must evaluate each user generated page in your site before AdSense code is placed in it. If you think that some of the content created by your users might be borderline material, you may have to make them aware of AdSense policies and add a 'Report a Violation' link to all the pages in question.

Another important rule concerns copyright material. Copyright infringement is when an individual makes a copy of someone else's work without their permission. Copyright infringement is rife on the web and it is often tolerated in small doses (after all it is what contributes to the quick and easy nature of the internet). But if someone else's work is clearly been stolen and used to make money using AdSense, Google will respond swiftly and may terminate the guilty party's AdSense account. Google AdSense rules on this matter are clearly stated in the section of their site that discusses the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). They have a very solid system in place that enables anyone to file a notice of infringement and which also enables individuals to file a counter notice.

Avoid getting involved with issues of infringement. Make sure you understand AdSense rules and always try to create your own material whenever possible.

The last important AdSense rule involves click behaviour. Even though it sounds ridiculous there are some AdSense beginners that still believe they can get away with clicking their own ads. After all, how is Google going to know it's them?

Well Google do know, they do find out. Clicking on your own ads is one of the easiest ways to get yourself banned.

Other AdSense publishers use more subtle ways on their sites to encourage the click. Some use images, symbols (like arrows) and text to 'influence' clicks from visitors.

However, all these methods are not allowed by Google. Clicks must originate from genuine human interest in the ads themselves, not by the publisher encouraging them.

You cannot use methods to encourage accidental clicks by covering ads with hyperlinked images. Or embedding a Google ad link unit into a menu system so that a visitor can't tell the two apart.

You cannot deliberately bring undue attention to the ads themselves by using text such as 'Great Resources', 'More Information Here', or simply 'Navigation.'

These are only some of the rules you need to know about AdSense. But if you are planning to use AdSense, or if you already have a site but want to know more go to Google and find more about their Terms of Service (ToS). Ignorance is no excuse for getting banned. Get informed so that you can use AdSense more confidently and securely.

AdSense is a program run by Google. It allows you (the website owner) to make money by displaying "Google Ads" on your websites. With the insertion of a simple code Google makes text, image and/or video ads appear on your website. These ads are contextual and show up based on the keywords and content present on your website. Because they are "contextual" and usually text ads, AdSense ads are less intrusive than traditional ads, such as banners. Since the ads are picked based on the content of the website, the ads are also more relevant than traditional banners. You (the website owner) are paid when an Internet user clicks on an ad you placed on one of your web pages. The amount you are paid depends on what ad and what keyword the ad is based on. You might make a few cents or a few dollars per click. All the ads displayed come from folks using the Google AdWords advertising program. Something to be aware of... Because you get paid for each click made on an AdSense link regardless of whether anything is purchased at the advertiser's site or not, it may be tempting for your friends try and "help you" by clicking on all of the ads on your site. However, this is called "click fraud" and Google watches for this type of activity intently. If a web page looks like it's showing signs of click fraud, you can lose your access to Google AdSense forever. There are three main ways you can encourage clicks on your website... Get more visitors to your site... The more traffic you have, The more people see your ads, The more likely it is some of them will click on your ads. Add tons of valuable content to your site. Value attracts AdSense ads that pay higher per click. You can use copy on your website to encourage visitors to click on the ads. Some of the most common phrases are "Sponsored Links" and "Advertisements." Note: It is against Google AdSense policy to post statements like "Please click on my AdSense links" and you can lose your Google AdSense account permanently for doing so. Contextual text based ads focused on the keywords you choose for your pages is what Google AdSense is. So by placing Google AdSense on your website you easily open the door to an additional income stream.
